How many Frances fit into Russia, Canada and China?

Russia holds 31 metropolitan Frances. Canada holds 18, Australia 14, India just under 6. Every one of those ratios drops once you count French Guiana, New Caledonia and the rest, which is why two reputable sources will hand you two different answers to the same question.

France is a useful yardstick precisely because it has two legitimate sizes:

  • Metropolitan France: 551,695 km², the geodetic figure fixed in 1951, Corsica included. This is the hexagon on the map of Europe.
  • France in full: 672,051 km², adding the five overseas departments and the overseas collectivities, excluding the Antarctic claim of Adélie Land.

That is a 22 % gap. French Guiana alone accounts for 83,846 km², more than Austria, and sits on the coast of South America rather than in Europe.

Areas come from the United Nations Statistics Division, which counts inland water. Other bodies publish different totals depending on what they include: the United States shows up as 9,525,067 km² here and 9,833,517 km² in the CIA World Factbook. A ratio only means something when both halves come from the same convention.

1. Russia: 31 metropolitan Frances

At 17,098,246 km², Russia holds 31.0 metropolitan Frances and 25.4 full ones. Nothing else comes close: Canada, in second place, is barely more than half its size.

Detail. Area badly undersells what that means to live with. Moscow to Vladivostok is 6,416 km in a straight line, against 1,044 km from Brest to Nice, France’s longest diagonal. Crossing Russia west to east covers six French diagonals and seven time zone changes, Moscow sitting at UTC+3 and Vladivostok at UTC+10. The European quarter west of the Urals carries roughly three quarters of the population.

2. Canada: 18 metropolitan Frances

Canada covers 9,984,670 km², which is 18.1 metropolitan Frances and 14.9 full ones. It is the second largest country on Earth with fewer people than France.

Detail. Close to 9 % of Canada’s surface is fresh water, the highest share of any country. Strip out the lakes and the ratio falls to a little under 17. The other number worth holding: the CIA World Factbook puts around 90 % of Canadians within 160 km of the US border, on a strip that is a rounding error of the territory.

3. China: 17.4 metropolitan Frances

China occupies 9,596,960 km², so 17.4 metropolitan Frances and 14.3 full ones. It ranks above the United States in the UN count and below it in the CIA one.

Detail. The flip comes from territorial waters and the Great Lakes, counted differently by each. The two countries sit within 1 % of each other, a gap of 71,893 km², slightly more than Ireland. At that resolution, “China is bigger than the US” is a statement about a footnote, not about geography.

4. United States: 17.3 metropolitan Frances

The United States totals 9,525,067 km² on the same basis, 17.3 metropolitan Frances and 14.2 full ones. Alaska alone is roughly 1.7 million km², more than three metropolitan Frances stacked together.

Detail. The sharper comparison for an American reader is at state level. Texas covers 695,662 km², which is 1.26 metropolitan Frances. France fits inside Texas, but only just, and France in full at 672,051 km² comes within about 23,000 km² of matching it, the area of Sicily. The lower 48 without Alaska and Hawaii are worth roughly 14 metropolitan Frances.

5. Brazil: 15.4 metropolitan Frances

Brazil spans 8,510,346 km², or 15.4 metropolitan Frances and 12.7 full ones. It is also the only country on this list that shares a land border with France, 730 km of it, between French Guiana and the state of Amapá.

Detail. That is France’s longest land border, ahead of the Spanish one. It is also why the Brazilian ratio moves so much between the two columns: French Guiana is the single largest piece of overseas France, and it happens to sit next door to Brazil.

6. Australia: 14 metropolitan Frances

Australia covers 7,741,220 km², exactly 14.0 metropolitan Frances and 11.5 full ones. Smallest continent, sixth largest country.

Detail. This is where intuition fails hardest. Perth to Sydney is 3,291 km in a straight line, more than three French diagonals, on a landmass that reads as a compact block on the map. It is the same compression bias covered in the most isolated cities in the world: the southern hemisphere gets mentally shrunk.

7. India: 6 metropolitan Frances

India totals 3,287,263 km², which is 6.0 metropolitan Frances and 4.9 full ones. The most populous country on Earth fits into six Frances.

Detail. Turn it around and the contrast reverses. Roughly 1.45 billion people on six Frances against 68 million on one works out at about 440 people per km² in India and 123 in metropolitan France, a factor of 3.6. Area says nothing about what a country carries.

8. Argentina: 5 metropolitan Frances

Argentina measures 2,780,400 km², 5.0 metropolitan Frances and 4.1 full ones. It is the largest Spanish-speaking country in the world.

Detail. The country runs from the Tropic of Capricorn to Tierra del Fuego. Buenos Aires to Ushuaia is 2,348 km, more than two French diagonals, and the fastest nonstop takes 3 h 40. Countries stretched along a meridian always look smaller than they are, because the eye compares widths first.

9. Kazakhstan: 4.9 metropolitan Frances

Kazakhstan covers 2,724,910 km², 4.9 metropolitan Frances and 4.1 full ones. It sits within 2 % of Argentina, which makes the two interchangeable at this resolution.

Detail. It is the largest landlocked country on the planet, with no coastline on any ocean. Its population stood at 20.3 million at the start of 2025, about 7 people per km² against 123 in metropolitan France. Five Frances of land, a third of the French population.

10. Algeria: 4.3 metropolitan Frances

Algeria spans 2,381,741 km², 4.3 metropolitan Frances and 3.5 full ones. It has been the largest country in Africa since Sudan split in 2011.

Detail. Around four fifths of it is Sahara. Almost the entire population lives on the northern coastal belt, 100 to 200 km deep, less than a fifth of the country. Measured on the inhabited strip alone, Algeria is smaller than metropolitan France, while the raw ratio says 4.3.

Why the number changes depending on which France you mean

France is unusual in Europe for having several defensible areas. Metropolitan France is 551,695 km² geodetically and 549,134 km² cadastrally, the difference being inland water bodies over one square kilometre and where the coastline is drawn at low tide.

Add the five overseas departments and you reach 641,184 km². Add the overseas collectivities, New Caledonia and French Polynesia among them, and you reach 672,051 km². Adélie Land, the 432,000 km² Antarctic claim, is never counted: the Antarctic Treaty freezes territorial claims.

The result is that France ranks 41st, 43rd or 48th by area depending on the source. A page saying “Russia is 30 times France” and a page saying 25 can both be right.

What an area ratio never tells you

Area scales as the square of length. A country 16 times larger by area is not 16 times longer to cross, it is about 4 times longer. That single confusion drives most bad distance estimates.

Australia proves it cleanly. It is 14.0 metropolitan Frances, and the square root of 14 is 3.7. Perth to Sydney is 3,291 km against 1,044 km for Brest to Nice: a factor of 3.2, not 14. The reverse error is just as common, and costs more: people underestimate domestic flights inside large countries because “same country” overrides the actual kilometres. That is what makes several of the 10 longest flights in the world so counter-intuitive.

Running the ratio downward

France also works as the larger term, and the results tend to land better. Metropolitan France holds 2.3 United Kingdoms (244,376 km²), 1.5 Germanys, 1.8 Italys and 1.1 Spains. It is the largest country in the European Union.

Globally, metropolitan France is 0.37 % of the world’s land area and France in full 0.45 %. The 31 to 1 ratio with Russia is not far off double the 18 to 1 ratio between metropolitan France and Belgium.

Mirror piece: the true size of Africa, where the same exercise runs the other way and exposes a continent far larger than any map suggests. Going further: the antipodes of France and the longest straight line on Earth.

Frequently asked questions

How many times does France fit into Russia?

Russia holds 31.0 metropolitan Frances (17,098,246 km² divided by 551,695 km²) and 25.4 full Frances once the overseas departments and collectivities are counted, taking France to 672,051 km². Both figures are correct; they simply count different Frances. That is the entire reason published answers swing between 25 and 31.

What is the exact area of France?

Metropolitan France, the European part including Corsica, is 551,695 km² by the geodetic measurement fixed in 1951. Adding the five overseas departments gives 641,184 km². Adding the overseas collectivities such as New Caledonia and French Polynesia gives 672,051 km². Adélie Land in Antarctica is never included in the total.

Is Texas bigger than France?

Texas, at 695,662 km², is bigger than metropolitan France at 551,695 km², by a factor of 1.26. It is also bigger than France in full at 672,051 km², but only by about 23,000 km², roughly the area of Sicily. So Texas beats France on either definition, narrowly on the second.

Why do country areas differ between sources?

Because each organisation picks what to count: inland water, large lakes, territorial waters, attached islands, disputed territory. The United States is 9,525,067 km² for the UN Statistics Division and 9,833,517 km² for the CIA World Factbook, a 300,000 km² spread. Any area ratio is only reliable when both numbers come from the same source.

Is a country 16 times larger 16 times longer to cross?

No. Area grows as the square of distance, so a country 16 times larger by area is roughly 4 times longer to cross, assuming a similar shape. Australia is 14 metropolitan Frances but only about 3.2 French diagonals wide. Mistaking an area ratio for a distance ratio is the most common error in distance estimation.
